Vashon Food Bank

Our Services

The Food Bank offers four weekly grocery distributions on-site at Sunrise Ridge, behind Neighborcare Health.  We provide a welcoming atmosphere and a positive shopping experience for customers.

Customers choose from an array of items including fresh fruits and vegetables; protein sources such as chicken, fish, tofu and dairy;  cereals/grains, canned goods, coffee/tea, fresh bread and pastries.  We also offer personal hygiene supplies, diapers and pet food.

We also offer nutritious and healthy choices that are lower in sodium, sugar and fat and are moving towards offering special dietary foods when possible.

Anyone on Vashon in need of nutritious food to feed themselves or their family is welcome to use the Food Bank.  We don’t ask for any proof of need - nor do we ask for ID of any kind.  Information is confidential.

Customers are welcome to come as often as every week, as needed, and are asked to bring their own bags to distribution.

If you have an emergency need outside of Food Bank hours, emergency bags are available at the Food Bank during office hours.  Please come to the Office. The Food Bank can also supply emergency bags to local organizations who want to have them on-hand.

In 2018, Picnics in the Park served over 5,200 lunches to more than 570 children and youth. It helps destigmatize food insecurity by offering food to everyone, not just those who are in need as school is out. And with face-paintiers, the fire department, and the library involved, there’s so much to do together.

Our Programs

PIcnics in the park

Now in its 6th year, Picnics in the Park offers an inclusive, fun and healthy summer experience for all children and youth, providing free nutritious lunches and volunteer-led activities. Picnics was created to make sure that children who qualified for free and reduced lunches from the School District continued to have access to healthy food all summer, but has evolved into a unique community-wide daily outing for families, a destination that epitomizes the best of summer!

Picnics in the Park begins on the first day of summer vacation and continues through the last day. Lunch includes a variety of sandwiches, a gluten free option, fruits, vegetables and snacks.  Three days week, the Children’s Librarian reads stories under the trees and hands out free books once a week.  Other volunteers offer physical activities, arts and crafts, music and mime.  The Fire Department is often on-hand once or twice to entertain and educate about fire safety.

Picnics in the Park is presented in partnership with:

Harvest for Vashon

Harvest for Vashon projects include Grow-a-Row, gleaning fruits and vegetables, and food preservation. All foods go directly to Food Bank customers and the projects rely on volunteers. Harvest for Vashon is a collaboration between the Vashon Food Bank, the Food Access Partnership of the Vashon Island Growers Association (VIGA) and Rotary First Harvest.  This program further addresses food security and food justice on Vashon Island by promoting and increasing access to fresh local produce for individuals who may not, otherwise, be able to afford it.

Food Bank Garden

The Food Bank grows fresh produce in a garden on-site at Sunrise Ridge.  In 2018, over 1000 pounds of vegetables were harvested and delivered directly to customers.  Vashon Master Gardeners partners with the Food Bank for this demonstration garden. Volunteers are welcome for weekly work parties.

Child Hunger Initiative

The Food Bank helps reduce child hunger on Vashon through weekly snack deliveries to Chautauqua Elementary School, McMurray Middle School, Vashon High School and StudentLink and FamilyLink programs.
