Our mission is to work with our community to ensure that no one on Vashon Island goes hungry. We accomplish this by providing nutritious food and related services to anyone in need.

We envision a vibrant, economically and culturally diverse island community that is free from hunger. Community supported, we are a vital resource for those who live or work on Vashon Island.

OUR IMPACT

Since its inception in the 1970s, the Vashon Community Food Bank has grown as the need on Vashon has expanded. With rising home and rental prices, and decreased living-wage employment opportunities, food insecurity has now become one of the most pressing social issues here, with at least one in seven households relying on our resources.

270+

volunteers

In 2018 we had over 270 volunteers work over 6900 hours to help the Food Bank - from food distribution to special programs like Picnics in the Park - we can’t do this without you.

40+

Years Serving VASHON

While the original Food Bank was started in the 1970s, we incorporated as a non-profit organization in December 1991. We have been fighting hunger on Vashon ever since with direct distribution and innovative programming.

HOUSEHOLDS

The changing economy has brought about a major shift in how we view food insecurity and hunger; they are part of our everyday language. At least one-in-seven households on Vashon relies on Food Bank resources.

OUR PROGRAMS

The Food Bank’s services have grown and evolved to best serve our community. From being open four times a week for customer shopping at the Sunrise Ridge facility to specialized home deliveries, we also provide early access to seniors and those with disabilities, including accessible parking. Programs like Picnics in the Park, Harvest for Vashon, and the Food Bank Garden all add to the diverse ways the Food Bank meets Island needs.

Food distribution

Access to the Food Bank is offered four times a week, with opening hours designed to accommodate seniors, those with disabilities, families, and common work hours.

The FOOD BANK GARDEN

We all know how healthy, sustainable, and cost effective home grown fruits and vegetables are. Here at the Food Bank, we have dedicated plots of land and raised beds to grow a variety of produce. It’s a great way to engage and educate the public too!

HOME delivery

For some, getting to the Food Bank is a challenge, so every Tuesday volunteers prepare and deliver bags of nutritious food to households across the Island in our trusty white van!

PICNICS in the park

“Picnics” was created to make sure that children on free/reduced lunches from the School District continued to get to healthy food all summer.  It’s evolved into a unique family daily outing; a ‘destination’ that epitomizes the best of summer!

October 2018

“I moved here in 1985, met someone and fell in love. We worked in construction until we retired 7 years ago. My social security is $1068/mo, I was homeless for three years. No place to cook. Now we are in a home with a kitchen. The food bank makes it possible for us to live on Vashon, my budget wouldn’t work without your service.”

GET INVOLVED

In 2018, over 270 members of our community served as volunteers at the Food Bank.  Their 6,000 of service made a big difference in our capacity to fight hunger!  Volunteers work in all aspects of the Food Bank: On the front lines in distribution, home delivery and outside at Ober Park with Picnics in the Park.  They are also behind the scenes with food pick-ups, recycling, lunch-making and garden-tending.
