In 2020, the Vashon Food Bank provided grocery services to 1732 individuals
In 2021, over 200 volunteers donated over 8,563 hours to help the Food Bank - from food distribution to special programs like Picnics to Go - we can’t do this without you.
Vashon’s Food Bank was started in the basement of the Presbyterian Church in the late 1970s and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in December 1991. We have been offering free groceries to Vashon residents ever since, through direct grocery distribution and innovative programming.
The changing economy has brought about a major shift in how we view food insecurity and hunger; they are part of our everyday language. At least one-in-seven households on Vashon rely on Food Bank resources.
The Food Bank’s services have evolved along with the changing needs of our community. During COVID-19, we have pivoted from four times weekly grocery shopping on Sunrise Ridge and specialized home delivery service, to a program of once a week grocery pick up and a hugely expanded home delivery program. Additional programs like Picnics to Go! (formerly Picnics in the Park), Harvest for Vashon, and the Food Bank Garden add to the diverse ways the Vashon Food Bank meets the island’s needs.
With the arrival of COVID-19, we have moved from a multi-day grocery shopping model to a weekly shopping list request. Those fresh groceries are packed by a team of masked, trained, efficient volunteers and delivered out the door to shoppers waiting in their vehicles. This pick-up service is offered two times on Wednesdays, 10am - 2pm and 4pm - 7pm.
We all know how healthy, sustainable, and cost effective home grown fruits and vegetables are. Here at the Food Bank, we have dedicated plots of land and raised beds to grow a variety of produce. It’s a great way to engage and educate the public too!
For some, getting to the Food Bank is a challenge, so each Thursday and Friday are our Home Delivery Days. With the arrival of COVID-19, many families chose the security of remaining home and requesting home delivery via a weekly shopping list request. Teams of volunteers - packers and drivers - pack nutritious groceries and deliver to all parts of Vashon Island.
Picnics to Go (formerly Picnics in the Park) was created to make sure that children on free/reduced lunches from the School District continue to have access to healthy food over the summer, This year, with COVID-19, we offered lunches to all at Vashon High School and delivered by bus to multiple locations around the island!

In 2020, over 200 members of our community served as volunteers at the Food Bank. Their 9,485 hours of service made a big difference in our capacity to fight hunger! Volunteers work in all aspects of the Food Bank: In the warehouse packing groceries for distribution, grocery home delivery and with Picnics to Go. They are also behind the scenes with food pick-ups, recycling, lunch-making and garden-tending.
80% of our operating budget comes from on-Island contributions. We rely on local donations to meet the expanding need on the Island.
