Now in its sixth year, Picnics in the Park offers a welcoming, fun, healthy summer experience for all children and youth, providing free nutritious lunches and volunteer-led activities.
Picnics was created to make sure that children who qualified for free and reduced lunches from the School District continued to have access to healthy food all summer. It has evolved into a unique community wide daily outing for families, a ‘destination’ that epitomizes the best of summer!
Picnics begins on the first day of summer vacation and continues through the last day. Lunch includes choices of sandwiches and a gluten free option, fruits, vegetables and snacks. Three days week, the Children’s Librarian reads stories under the trees and hands out free books once a week. Other volunteers offer physical activities, arts and crafts, music and mime. The Fire Department is often on-hand once or twice to entertain and educate about fire safety.
The Food Bank partners with the Park District and the Vashon Library to present Picnics.
